When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. It’s an old saying that took on a new meaning for me about five years ago. The road to my readiness has been long and winding, but the arrival of Flossy — Florence Scovel Shinn — marked a significant transformation in my life.
(You will find an audio version at the bottom of this post.)
My Inner Circle
Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to have a remarkable crew of influences, whom I refer to as “My Inner Circle.” These individuals, most of whom have passed on, provide invaluable lessons, shaping my worldview and guiding my steps. Among them are luminaries like Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Teddy Roosevelt. They’ve imparted wisdom that has become the backbone of my personal philosophy.
When the Student is Ready He Finds Flossy
Five years ago, I added a new member to My Inner Circle: Florence Scovel Shinn, or Flossy, as I affectionately call her. Her teachings were a beacon, illuminating a path I hadn’t seen before. Discovering Flossy was like finding a hidden treasure chest brimming with wisdom and practical advice.
I was searching for a way to find peace of mind because it seemed that everything was coming at me from every direction. In the midst of this chaos, I randomly stumbled upon an article about her. Intrigued, I sought out her work. Hence, I was ready. Skeptical at first, I picked up “The Game of Life and How to Play It,” expecting little more than a pleasant read. But as I turned the pages, I found myself engrossed in Flossy’s straightforward yet profound insights. Her emphasis on the power of words, visualization, and positive thinking struck a chord with me.
When the Student is Ready – My Transformation
Adding Flossy to My Inner Circle was a natural decision. Her teachings dovetailed perfectly with the principles I’d already embraced from the other members of my circle. But Flossy brought something new to the table—a fresh perspective that was both practical and deeply spiritual.
The impact of Flossy’s wisdom on my life was nothing short of transformative. Her teachings on affirmations and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset became integral parts of my daily routine. I began to notice subtle shifts in my thoughts and actions. Where I once saw obstacles, I started seeing opportunities. Challenges became lessons, and setbacks turned into setups for something greater.
A Journey of Five Years
One pivotal moment came during a particularly tough period. I was grappling with a series of personal and professional setbacks. It felt like the universe was conspiring against me. But in the midst of this turmoil, I remembered Flossy’s words: “The first start toward success is to be glad you are yourself.” Clinging to this mantra, I persevered, and slowly but surely, things began to turn around.
As I reflect on the past five years, I see how Flossy and the rest of My Inner Circle have guided me through every twist and turn. Their collective wisdom has been a steady hand, helping me navigate the highs and lows of life with grace and resilience. I’ve learned to trust the process, remain open and teachable, and embrace each moment as a stepping stone on my journey.
The Ongoing Influence
Flossy’s influence continues to shape my daily life. I start each day with affirmations, visualizing the outcomes I desire and setting a positive tone for the day ahead. Her teachings have become a part of my very being, a guiding star that lights my path.
If You’re Ready for a New Teacher
If you’re ready for a new teacher, I’ve composed two books based on what I’ve learned from Flossy: The Teachings of Florence Scovel Shinn and The Book of Affirmations: Based on the Teachings of Florence Scovel Shinn. (I also released a video about The Book of Affirmations)These books compile her wisdom and provide practical guidance for those seeking to transform their lives through positive thinking and affirmations.
So, my journey to readiness has been a tapestry woven with the threads of wisdom from My Inner Circle. Flossy’s arrival marked a new chapter, one filled with growth, transformation, and unwavering faith. If you find yourself searching for your own Flossy, take heart. Keep learning, keep growing, and trust that when you’re ready, the teacher will appear. The road may be long, but the destination is worth every step.
